An inspiring and innovative donation

Vijay Rajadhyaksha, B. Tech., Mech E, H6

Over the past year, we have been in conversation with Vijay Rajadhyaksha (MechE 74), who is based in Florida, about his contribution to IIT Bombay. Vijay had committed a Rs 20 Lakh donation to IIT B and had donated some land that he had near Mumbai to the institute as part of his contribution. After the necessary legal transfers, it was recently assessed and was a few lakhs short of the amount he had committed.

Like many of our classmates living in the USA, Vijay faced the financial requirement to make annual required taxable withdrawals from retirement accounts. Taking advantage of an opportunity to both fulfil the rest of his pledge and to gain a tax benefit, he made up the shortfall to IIT with a QCD (Qualified Charitable Distribution) from his account in the US.

We share this story with his permission to inspire others to match his efforts. This is inspiring on several levels both for his dedication to our alma mater as well as for his creative use of alternative donation channels.

In his words “My efforts is to make a small difference in the wellbeing of our cherished IITB, that gave us so much for a paltry sum [for our tuition] !! “

Thank you, Vijay, for your generosity and for inspiring others to give.
